Terms of Service

Last updated: 20 September 2026

These terms are the agreement between you and Clinton Onaiwu ("we", "us"), of Nigeria, covering your use of the Illumin app. By using Illumin you accept them. If you do not, please stop using the app and delete it.

We have tried to write these in plain English. Where a term has a legal meaning we have kept it, but nothing here is meant to be a trap.

1. Who can use Illumin

You must be at least 13 years old, or 16 if that is the age of digital consent where you live. If you are under 18, you need a parent or guardian to agree to these terms on your behalf.

2. Your account

You can read as a guest, without an account. Your books stay on your device, nothing syncs, and the AI reading aids are unavailable.

With an account — created with an email code or with Google — your library, reading position, highlights, bookmarks and preferences sync between your devices, and the AI reading aids become available.

You are responsible for keeping access to your email secure, since that is how signing in works. Tell us at privacy@illuminreader.com if you think someone else is using your account.

One person, one account. The free AI allowance is granted once per device, not once per account, so making a second account on the same phone does not produce a second allowance. Deliberately working around that limit — or around any other limit in the app — is a breach of these terms.

3. Your books

Illumin is a reader. You bring your own EPUB files.

4. The AI reading aids

Illumin can explain a passage, define a word, summarise what you have read, and draw a scene. These are optional, they are off until you turn them on, and they work by sending text to AI providers — the Privacy Policy sets out exactly what is sent and to whom.

Please understand what you are getting:

Allowances. Free accounts get a one-time allowance of 3 illustrations and 25 explanations. Illumin Plus raises this to 15 illustrations a month, with explanations subject to fair use. We may adjust these limits as provider costs change; if we reduce them we will tell you first. Requests that fail are not charged against your allowance.

Generated illustrations. Subject to your AI provider's terms and your compliance with these, you may use the images Illumin generates for you personally — keep them, save them, share them. They carry an Illumin watermark, which you must not remove. Do not present them as official artwork for a book, and do not use them in a way that misleads anyone about who made them.

Do not use the AI features to generate unlawful content, harass anyone, produce sexual content involving minors, attempt to extract the underlying prompts or models, or send content you have no right to send. We may suspend the features, or your account, if you do.

5. Acceptable use

Do not: break the law with Illumin; interfere with or overload our servers; try to gain access to parts of the service that are not yours; reverse-engineer the app except as the law expressly allows; automate or script it to farm allowances; or resell access to it.

6. Illumin Plus

What it costs. $4.99 per month, or $39.99 per year, with a 14-day free trial on first purchase. Prices shown in the app are the ones that apply and may differ by country and tax.

How it is billed. Through your Google Play account. It renews automatically at the end of each period until you cancel. Your trial converts into a paid subscription unless you cancel before it ends.

How to cancel. In the Play Store, under Subscriptions — or through the Manage subscription link in the app, which takes you there. Cancel at least 24 hours before renewal. You keep Plus until the end of the period you have paid for.

Refunds are handled by Google Play under Google's policies, not by us. We cannot issue them directly, though we will help you if something has gone wrong.

Price changes. If we change the price, Google will notify you and ask you to accept the new one before it applies to you. You can cancel instead.

Deleting your account does not cancel your subscription. Only you can cancel it, in the Play Store. Cancel first, then delete.

Illumin Plus is currently available on Android only.

7. Content from other people

We are not responsible for content we did not write, and these terms do not grant you rights in it beyond those its own licence gives you.

8. Availability and changes to the app

We will try to keep Illumin working, but we do not promise it will always be available or free of faults. We may change, add or remove features. If we remove something you are paying for, you may cancel and — where the law requires it — we will help you obtain a proportionate refund through Google Play.

Features described as coming later may not arrive.

9. Ending it

You may stop using Illumin at any time and delete your account from the You tab. Your books remain yours and remain on your device unless you delete them too.

We may suspend or end your access if you materially breach these terms — in particular sections 3, 4 or 5 — or if we must in order to comply with the law. Except where a breach is serious or repeated, we will warn you first and give you a chance to put it right. If we end your access without cause, and you have paid for Plus, we will help you get the unused part refunded.

10. Disclaimers

Illumin is provided as is. To the fullest extent the law allows, we disclaim implied warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose and non-infringement.

We do not warrant that AI output is accurate, that syncing is instantaneous or lossless, or that your data cannot be lost. Keep your own copies of your EPUB files. Illumin is a reader, not a backup service.

11. Limits on liability

To the fullest extent the law allows, we are not liable for indirect, incidental, special or consequential loss, or for lost profits, lost data or lost goodwill, however caused.

Our total liability to you for any claim is limited to whichever is greater: the amount you paid us in the twelve months before the claim, or US $50.

Nothing here limits liability that cannot be limited by law — including liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, for fraud, or for your statutory rights as a consumer. If you are a consumer in the UK, EEA or another jurisdiction with mandatory consumer protections, those rights apply in full and are unaffected by this section.

12. Changes to these terms

We may update these terms. The date at the top will change, and for anything that materially affects you we will tell you in the app before it takes effect. Continuing to use Illumin after that means you accept the new version; if you do not, delete your account.

13. Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of Nigeria, and disputes belong to the courts of Nigeria. If you are a consumer elsewhere, this does not deprive you of the protection of your local law or of your right to bring a claim in your own courts where local law gives you that right.

14. Miscellaneous

If any part of these terms is unenforceable, the rest still applies. Not enforcing a term straight away does not waive it. You may not transfer your rights under these terms; we may transfer ours to a successor if Illumin changes hands, on notice to you and without reducing your rights. These terms and the Privacy Policy are the whole agreement between us about Illumin.
